PSU Performance at a Glance

The Public Sector Enterprises in Assam play a vital role in the state economy. There are 40 (forty) State Level Public Enterprises (SLPE)s under the Administrative control of various Departments of Government of Assam.

These enterprises serve in different sectors of economy such as:

  • Service Sector: 6
  • Trade Sector: 5
  • Welfare Sector: 4
  • Promotional Sector: 12
  • Production Sector: 10
  • Construction Sector: 3

These enterprises are engaged in activities such as:

  • Manufacturing activitie
  • Tourism
  • Warehousing
  • Supply of agricultural imputes
  • Housing
  • Road transport
  • Electricity
  • Water supply & sewerage
  • Financing for industrial/ trade development
  • Social engineering etc.

The growing volume of investment in these State Level Public Enterprises helps in strengthening infrastructure, expansion of business activities and increases employment opportunities. Thirty one (31) of these enterprises are registered under the Companies Act, 1956, six (6) under various Statutory Acts and three (3) SLPEs under the Assam Co-operative Societies Act, 1949. The SLPEs in Assam enlisted under the Public Enterprises Department are functioning under the control of 22 Administrative Departments, of which:

  • SLPEs under Industries & Commerce Department: 10
  • SLPEs under Power Department , WPT&BC Department and Co-operation Department: 3 (under each)
  • SLPEs under Handloom Textile & Sericulture  Department, Urban Development and  Mines  & Mineral Department: 2 (under each)
  • SLPEs under Transport, Welfare of Minorities, Finance, Information Technology, Soil Conservation,  Agriculture, Home, Cultural Affairs, Education (Elementary), Fishery, Hill Areas, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Tourism, Food & Civil Supplies and PWR Department: 1 (under each)

The SLPEs were created to:

  • Facilitate rapid economic growth and industrialisation in the State
  • Earn reasonable rate of return on investment made
  • Promote development of small scale and ancillary industries
  • Exploit natural resources for productive use of the State
  • Produce goods & services
  • Implement development programs providing financial support for the weaker sections of the society
  • Create employment opportunities in the state.
